A compressor is one such part that is vividly used on a ship for several purposes. With the main aim being to compress air or any fluid in order to reduce its volume, the compressor is a multipurpose element in marine! How?
Some of the ships have the central air compressor, the deck air compressor, AC compressor, and not to forget the refrigeration compressor.
Let’s know about the main parts of the Marine compressor.
- Cylinder liner:
A lot goes inside a compressor, and the critical thing that has to be the focus is maintaining the pressure and temperature. And, the cylinder liner inside the marine compressors does the same. It is designed to give a streamlined passage to the pressurized air, resulting in a minimum pressure drop.
The cylinder liner in Marine Compressor is made of graded cast iron and is enveloped in a water jacket to absorb heat produced during the compression process.
- Piston:
The piston moves downward and draws air in the cylinder, and moves upward to do the opposite. A piston made with light-weight aluminium is used for a marine compressor unlike for the lubricating type graded where the cast iron piston is used. The piston is sealed with the piston rings; this also aids in scraping off the excess oil.
- Piston rod:
As the marine compressor is a colossal-sized high capacity compressor, so the piston is attached to a piston rod made of alloy steel. And to avoid the leakage chances of compressed air.
- Connecting rod:
There is a lot of thrust applied to the bearing surface when the compressor is in working, and this is where the connecting rod minimizes the thrust. The connecting rod in the Marine Compressor is usually made up of forged alloy steel.
- Crank shaft:
At Jyoti Engineering Combine, we manufacture crankshafts that are super sturdy and make the working smooth. A crankshaft is a shaft driven by a crank mechanism which consists of a series of cranks and crankpins. These are connected to the connecting rod of the compressor. The crankshaft in marine compressors is essentially the backbone of the internal combustion engine. It is responsible to convert a linear motion to a rotational motion.
We at Jyoti Engineering Combine manufacture crankshafts with high fatigue strength and wear resistance. This ensures a long service life to your compressor.
- Oil pump:
Oiling of the entire system is important, and when it comes to lubricating the oil pump, it is super-important. A lubricated oil pump is fitted to supply oil to all the bearings through the crankshaft. The oil pump has screws provided in the pump can be used to regulate the pressure of oil. Not only this, the oil pump has a filter inlet to avoid any unnecessary particles to enter inside the system of a marine compressor. This way, clean and dust/particle-free oil is supplied through the oil pump.
- Suction and discharge valve:
Made of stainless steel, these suction and discharge valves, as their name suggests are used to suck and to discharge air from one stage to another. For the marine compressor to be super-efficient, the proper assembling of suction and discharge valves is necessary.
- Suction filter:
The purpose of the suction filter is to absorb oil and wire mesh or any unnecessary material to enter inside the compression chamber.
- Driving motor:
An electrical motor is attached to the marine compressor for making it operational, and it is connected through a flywheel to the compressor.
This was all about the Marine compressor and some of its parts. According to different requirements, the specifications and the compressor spare part may differ.
